An Iran-U.S. agreement and the war in Ukraine took center stage among world leaders at the G-7 summit held in the French town of Evian-les-Bains. U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other top world leaders attended the summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
A preliminary understanding recently reached between Iran and the United States is drawing wide discussion. Under the agreement, the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened, regional tensions eased, and a path created for detailed talks on Iran’s nuclear program within the next 60 days, according to reports. The formal signing ceremony for the agreement is due to be held next Friday in Geneva, Switzerland.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, said of the agreement: “President Trump and I do not agree on everything.” He also made clear that Israel was not planning to withdraw troops from southern Lebanon, Gaza or Syria.
At the G-7 summit, Macron said the most important thing now was to secure a “firm, effective and lasting” agreement. He also discussed a possible Franco-British-led maritime initiative to restore safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The war in Ukraine was also among the summit’s main topics. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought to keep the support of the G-7 leaders while looking for a possible meeting with Trump. Before the summit began, Macron and Zelenskyy held a meeting at which the question of a Trump-Zelenskyy meeting also came up.
European leaders are trying to convince Trump that it is essential to maintain support for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Ukraine had now managed to mount resistance on the battlefield and that Russia’s economy was weakening under the pressure of international sanctions.
Arriving at the summit, Trump described the U.S.-Iran understanding as an important diplomatic success. He expressed hope that, along with restoring stability in the Middle East, new diplomatic efforts could also be made to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.
According to analysts, the security of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear program and the war in Ukraine are the three issues that will play the most important role in determining the outcome of this G-7 summit.
