U.S. President Donald Trump met Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in an important meeting at the ongoing G7 summit in France. After the meeting, facing reporters, the two leaders made several explosive and significant comments on the U.S.-Iran agreement and recent Middle East geopolitics.
Trump claimed that without the United States, and especially himself, by its side, Israel would not exist today. Saying Israel would have been wiped off the face of the earth had Iran obtained a nuclear weapon, Trump again claimed Iran had been only two weeks away from building one. But he said the ongoing war had eliminated Iran’s previous leadership, and that Iran now had a rational and intelligent leadership.
Trump criticized Netanyahu’s role on the Lebanon issue. He said: “Netanyahu must be more responsible on Lebanon.” Condemning the Israeli airstrike on Beirut just before the announcement of the agreement with Iran, Trump said: “I did not like the strike on Beirut at all, and I made that clear to them [Israel].”
Calling the situation in Lebanon a “minor war,” Trump gave Israel an unusual piece of advice. He said: “I advised Israel to leave the Hezbollah matter to Syria, because they can do this job better.”
At the meeting, Trump praised Qatar’s “courage” and its mediation role. He said: “We are very impressed with the way Qatar handled the whole situation. They have shown a very firm and resolute stance.”
