In Chattogram’s Anwara, a mother and father have been killed in an indiscriminate stabbing by their only son. After the incident the son, 38, was detained from his own room.

The tragedy took place at about 12 noon on Saturday, July 25, at the Chaitanya Mahajan house in the East Gujra area of ward 3 of Hailadhar union.

The dead are Swapan Das Gupta, 65, son of the late Rebati Das Gupta of the area, and his wife Kalpana Das, 55.

Eyewitnesses said the son had struggled with drug addiction for a long time and had been kept in drug-rehabilitation centres several times.

On Saturday morning he went out with his parents. They returned home at about a quarter to 12.

A short while later the son suddenly attacked his mother with a sharp weapon. When his father came forward to save her, he too was hacked and wounded indiscriminately. Locals then shouted and people from the surrounding area came forward. His mother died at the scene. His father, seriously wounded, was taken to the Anwara upazila health complex.

The assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of Anwara circle, Mahmudul Hasan, said that on being informed, police reached the scene and detained the accused son. The body of a woman was recovered from the scene, and news was received of one more death at the hospital. The two bodies are being recovered and sent to the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital for post-mortems. Legal action is being taken in the case, he said.
