A senior fisheries officer in Narail Sadar upazila, Abu Rayhan, has alleged that he was assaulted and his office computer smashed by a man identifying himself as a Chhatra Dal leader. Over the incident, Rayhan filed a case on Sunday (28 June) night naming Jisanur Rahman, 30, son of Tipu Sultan of Jadunathpur village in Narail, along with four to five unidentified people. Fisheries office staff said Jisanur had identified himself as a former Chhatra Dal leader, though party sources say he is currently member-secretary of the Swechchhasebak Dal in Bashgram union of Sadar upazila.

According to the case statement, Jisanur Rahman often went to the Narail Sadar upazila fisheries officer’s office demanding various confidential information, and when staff declined, he would abuse them. On the day of the incident, on Sunday afternoon, Jisanur and four or five unidentified people entered the fisheries officer’s office, where he demanded a demonstration list of the district’s beneficiary members.

The case states that fisheries officer Abu Rayhan said the information had been provided to Jisanur several times before; on hearing this, Jisanur became enraged, abused Rayhan in foul language and then allegedly punched him, injuring his nose, mouth, hands and other parts of his body. Office staff rescued Rayhan and took him to Narail District Hospital, the case states.

The case also states that Jisanur smashed a government desktop computer and monitor worth about Tk 68,000 on the office table, scattered important government documents and disrupted official work, before leaving the scene after threatening to kill the fisheries officer.

In a counter-allegation, Jisanur Rahman said he had gone to the upazila fisheries officer’s office to ask for a list of beneficiaries’ names. As he was leaving without the information, he said, a member of the office staff accused him of filming everything on his mobile phone, after which staff threw him to the floor and beat him indiscriminately. “Why would I assault the officer?” he said.

People of various professions, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that if there was CCTV footage at the office, it should be reviewed and prompt legal action taken against whoever was responsible.

Narail Sadar police station officer-in-charge Ajay Kumar Kundu said a case had been registered on the basis of the fisheries officer’s statement at around 9pm on Sunday, and that efforts were under way to arrest the accused.
