Former footballers launch a new club in Chougachha

The Shonali Otit (Golden Past) Club has been launched with a cake-cutting in Chougachha, Jashore.

Fulfilling a long-held hope of football lovers, the club began its journey with a colourful event on the grounds of Government Shahadat Pilot Model Secondary School in the municipal town on Thursday afternoon (October 1).

The event was chaired by club president Selim Reza Aulia, with upazila nirbahi officer Farzana Islam as chief guest. Moderated by club general secretary MA Mannan, it was also addressed by upazila BNP organising secretary Mostafizur Rahman Mostak, municipal BNP general secretary Abdul Halim Chanchal, former Jashore district footballer Sohel Al Mamun Nishad, UP chairman Ataur Rahman Lal, Abdar Rashid and Ainal Haque, among others.

Former star footballers of Chougachha, local dignitaries, sports enthusiasts and large numbers of local people attended, and seeing the players of the golden past together on one stage after many years created a festive mood. A celebratory rally went around the town’s main roads, with participants chanting football slogans to the beat of musical instruments.

At a meeting after the rally, speakers called for reviving Chougachha’s lost football tradition and drawing young people to sport to keep them away from drugs, and expressed hope that the club would play a major role. Through the club, new players will be able to improve their skills alongside experienced footballers, and regular tournaments and football training are planned. At the end, the chief guest and other guests declared the club open and cut a cake.
