RANGPUR — A court has sent Shamim Al Mamun, general secretary of the Badarganj upazila unit of the Zia Parishad and a Bengali lecturer at Badarganj Government College, to jail in a check-dishonour case. The case was filed against him over a dishonoured cheque for 16 lakh taka (1 lakh = 100,000) allegedly taken on the promise of a job.

On Monday afternoon (June 1), Sohel Rana, judge of Rangpur Judicial Magistrate Court-2 (Badarganj), rejected his bail and ordered him sent to jail. Mamun had earlier appeared in court and applied for bail through his lawyer.

Rangpur district court inspector Aminul Islam said the case was filed on October 5 by Md Faisal Haque of South Baochandi in the same upazila against Shamim Al Mamun, Zikrul Haque and Hadizzaman. The case was brought on allegations that 16 lakh taka had been taken through a cheque on the promise of a job under the Education Directorate’s SESDP project.

In the case, Mamun sought bail through his lawyer before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Sohel Rana. After the hearing, the judge ordered Mamun jailed, and he was subsequently taken to prison.

Police said Mamun is a Bengali lecturer at Badarganj Government Degree College and general secretary of the Badarganj upazila unit of the Zia Parishad, the BNP’s professionals’ forum. There are various allegations against him, including embezzling money on the promise of jobs. He also faces an allegation of securing his own job using forged credentials.

A letter signed on September 22, 2020, by Tajul Islam, assistant director of the Non-Government Teachers’ Registration and Certification Authority (NTRCA), shows that Mamun took up the post of Bengali lecturer at Badarganj Degree College on July 13, 2011, using a false name, roll number and address and a forged certificate in the third teacher registration examination. A case was filed against him over the matter.

Asked about Mamun being jailed, Bhupendra Nath Sarkar, acting principal of Badarganj Government Degree College, said: “I am not aware of the matter. And no one can do anything above the court. If he is involved in any crime, that is his own affair. There is nothing for us to do in this. However, if any directive is received, necessary action will be taken against him.”
