Prime Minister Tarique Rahman began summit talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Friday morning, local time. The meeting commenced at 10am Beijing time.
Earlier in the morning, at 9:15am, the prime minister laid a wreath at the Monument to the People’s Heroes on Tiananmen Square, paying tribute to China’s revolutionary leaders. The national anthems of both countries were played and a bugle sounded the last post. The prime minister stood in silence for a period following the wreath-laying ceremony to observe the occasion.
Among those accompanying the prime minister were his wife, Dr Zobaida Rahman; Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman; Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan; Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie; the prime minister’s Economic Adviser Rashid al Mahmud Titumir; Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir; Adviser for Education, Primary Education, Overseas Welfare and Employment Mahdi Amin; and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is currently in Beijing on a four-day official visit at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
The visit began with a trip to Malaysia on 21 June — the prime minister’s first official overseas tour since taking office. He subsequently attended the World Economic Forum’s Summer Davos 2026 in Dalian, China, where he participated in two days of events before arriving in Beijing on Wednesday afternoon.
On Thursday, bilateral talks between Bangladesh and China at the Great Hall of the People, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Premier Li Qiang, were followed by the signing of 13 memoranda of understanding across various areas of cooperation. Separately, Bangladesh’s ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) signed their own memorandum of understanding at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing. China’s Water Resources Minister Li Guoying also paid a courtesy call on the prime minister.
