A high-level delegation from the provincial government of China’s Yunnan province and a team from Kunming University visited Bangladesh Medical University, or BMU. The visit took place Sunday as part of three days of scientific meetings and workshops.
A bilateral meeting was held between Bangladesh Medical University and the Chinese representatives. The meeting discussed potential cooperation between the two countries in medical education, research, training, modern medical technology and different areas of healthcare.
Zhao Junmin, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China, spoke at the meeting. He highlighted the long-standing friendly and cooperative relationship between China and Bangladesh and expressed hope that health-sector cooperation between the two countries would be strengthened further.
Zhao said China has wide scope to share its achievements and experience with Bangladesh in healthcare, medical education, research, doctors’ training and modern medical technology. He also hoped cooperation in the health sector would expand further in the future and benefit people in both countries.
Kunming University Vice President Yu Qiang discussed different aspects of a memorandum of understanding signed between the two universities. He said the MoU had created an important foundation for academic and institutional cooperation between the two institutions. Under it, opportunities have been created for cooperation in medical education, research, training, teacher-student exchanges and other academic activities.
Bangladesh Medical University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad highlighted the university’s role in higher medical education, specialized healthcare, doctors’ training and research in Bangladesh. He said exchanges of knowledge, experience and technology with Chinese universities and medical institutions could further advance medical education and healthcare in the country.
At the meeting, Prof. Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam of Bangladesh Medical University’s urology department gave a presentation on the university’s role in medical education and healthcare in Bangladesh and on recent medical progress in the country.
In the presentation, he said Bangladesh Medical University is one of the country’s main centers for higher medical education and specialized healthcare. Patients from different parts of the country come there for treatment of complex diseases. The university also plays an important role in postgraduate medical education, specialist doctors’ training, clinical research and the development of modern treatment methods.
Highlighting recent advances in Bangladesh’s health sector, Prof. Rafiqul Islam said the country’s capacity is steadily increasing in treatment of complex and specialized diseases, organ transplantation, minimally invasive surgery, modern diagnostic technology and advanced healthcare.
Discussing progress in kidney transplantation, he said the country’s capacity and scope for kidney transplants are gradually expanding. Advanced surgical methods, multidisciplinary transplant care, modern immunosuppression and improvements in pre- and post-operative care have created new possibilities in the field.
He also said the use of minimally invasive procedures in urology, endourology, laparoscopic surgery and modern surgical interventions is increasing in the country alongside organ transplantation. Skilled workforce development, international training and knowledge exchange, and the use of advanced technology are playing an important role in advancing Bangladesh’s medical system.
Prof. Rafiqul Islam also highlighted the potential for mutual exchange of health-sector knowledge and technology between Bangladesh and China. He said there is scope to expand cooperation between universities and medical institutions in the two countries in medical education, specialist doctors’ training, kidney transplantation, modern surgical technology, medical research and advanced healthcare technology.
The event was conducted by Prof. Dr. Saiful Islam, chairman of Bangladesh Medical University’s urology department. At the meeting, both sides expressed optimism about further strengthening cooperation in medical education, research, training, modern medical technology and specialized healthcare.
