The Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) has developed two new high-yielding, blast disease-resistant, and nutritionally enriched Aman rice varieties — BINA Dhan-27 and BINA Dhan-28 — which have been approved for nationwide cultivation.

The varieties were formally approved at the 115th meeting of the National Seed Board at the Ministry of Agriculture, bringing BINA’s total number of rice varieties to 28.

Dr. Fahmina Yasmin, head of BINA’s plant breeding division, said BINA Dhan-27 is the country’s first blast-resistant high-yielding Aman rice variety. It has a lifecycle of 120 to 125 days and a plant height of 95 to 100 centimeters, making it resistant to lodging in strong winds. Average yield is six to 6.5 tons per hectare, reaching up to seven tons in favorable conditions — approximately one to 2.5 tons per hectare more than conventional varieties.

BINA Dhan-28 is an aromatic, medium-slim grain variety developed through marker-assisted backcrossing. It contains 24.83 milligrams of zinc per kilogram, which can help address nutritional deficiencies, particularly for children’s cognitive development and pregnant women’s dietary needs, Dr. Yasmin said.

BINA Director General Dr. Md. Shariful Haq Bhuiyan said BINA Dhan-28 is the highest-yielding aromatic Aman variety in the country and represents a landmark addition to the agricultural sector. Its photoperiod insensitivity, high yield, nutritional value, and aroma make it well-suited to boost farmer incomes, ensure consumer nutrition, and help fill the gap in the aromatic rice market, he said.
