Six police officials, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police joint commissioners Biplab Kumar Sarker and Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, have been dismissed for allegedly remaining absent from work without authorisation and absconding.
The Home Ministry issued separate gazettes on Wednesday (August 12) after approval by the acting president.
The other dismissed officials are former Wari division deputy commissioner Iqbal Hossain, DMP assistant commissioner Md Golam Ruhani, additional police superintendent Rajan Kumar Das and Kazi Ashraful Azim, who was attached to the Chattogram Range DIG office while suspended. Ruhani had been deputed as an assistant secretary at the Foreign Ministry; Rajan Das served at APBN in Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar.
Departmental cases were filed under the allegations of unauthorised absence and absconding. After investigation found the charges proved, the process for the major penalty of dismissal began.
The gazette said the six officials had been absent without permission for more than 60 days, failed to return to work after notices and did not inform authorities of their whereabouts. The cases alleged misconduct and absconding under rules 3(b) and 3(c) of the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018.
They did not answer show-cause notices. Investigating officers were appointed, and their reports found the allegations proved. A second round of show-cause notices also produced no response.
After reviewing the reports and seriousness of the allegations, the authorities decided to proceed with dismissal. The Public Service Commission was consulted under the 2018 rules and its 1979 regulations and advised that the officials could be dismissed.
The matter was presented for the president’s approval under rule 4(6) of the 2018 rules. Following approval, the Home Ministry issued gazettes dismissing the six officials.
