DHAKA — Bangladesh received about $1.97 billion in remittances from expatriate workers during the first 18 days of April, marking a significant rise in inflows that has eased pressure on foreign exchange reserves.

According to the latest figures from Bangladesh Bank, total remittances between April 1 and April 18 stood at $1.968 billion. That works out to a daily average of about $109.3 million.

Bangladesh Bank spokesman Arif Hossain Khan confirmed the figures on Sunday, April 19.

Economists said the rise in remittance flows is bringing relief to the country’s foreign exchange reserves and is playing an important role in maintaining overall economic stability.

Khan said remittances totaling $1.968 billion arrived during the first 18 days of April, compared with $1.694 billion in the same period last year. That represents a year-on-year increase.

Between July 1 and April 18 of the current fiscal year, the country received $28.177 billion in remittances, up 20 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Remittances reached $3.755 billion in March, the highest monthly total in Bangladesh’s history.

Remittances stood at $3.021 billion in February and $3.171 billion in January, $3.227 billion in December and $2.890 billion in November.

The country received $2.563 billion in October and $2.686 billion in September. In August and July, remittances were $2.422 billion and $2.478 billion respectively.
