JASHORE — Leaders and activists of the National Citizen Party blocked the road at Chanchra intersection in Jashore on Wednesday evening, July 16, to protest an attack on the party’s leaders and workers in Gopalganj.
They raised three demands at the protest rally. NCP leader Khaled Saifullah Jewel said the demands must be met immediately: leaders and workers of the Awami League across the country, including in Gopalganj, must be arrested; the police system must be reformed; and the Gopalganj deputy commissioner and superintendent of police must be withdrawn within 24 hours.
“We are united in resisting the banned Awami League,” he said. “An attack on our workers, who fought alongside us in the July movement, cannot be accepted in any way. We have taken to the streets in protest, and stricter programs will be announced if needed.”
Speakers warned that if any harm came to their colleagues, they would shut the entire country down. They also demanded the swift and safe rescue of injured leaders and workers.
Other speakers included district organizer Nuruzzaman, Al Mamun Likhon and Baizid Hossain. Sakib Hossain, Mohammad Ibne Sahad, Osman Gani, Said San, Sohanur Rahman, Minhaj, Sultana Khatun Jannat, Farhin Ahmed, Asma Islam, Rubaiya and other leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were also present.
