US President Donald Trump hosted a lunch at the White House for top Silicon Valley leaders. Speaking to reporters afterwards, he made a sudden joking remark about Google chief executive Sundar Pichai.
Trump called Pichai a “monster”, then immediately praised his successful, trouble-free life. The unusual remark surprised those present, and video shows Pichai smiling and giving a witty reply.
It happened when Trump called on Pichai to speak, then stopped himself mid-introduction and said: “This guy is a monster, and nobody knows him that way. What a great life! He’s a monster and he doesn’t have any problems. All you need to know is Sundar. Sundar is his name…”
Smiling, Pichai replied: “I hope that will be a better tagline than anything else said about me…”
Beyond the laughter, the event brought together major figures from the tech world. To ensure the safe and proper use of artificial intelligence, Google’s Sundar Pichai, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk and Nvidia’s leaders signed a major accord with Trump. Called the White House Accord on Superintelligence, it aims to ensure that advanced technology benefits people safely without creating risks.
Pichai said at the event that Google had invested hundreds of billions of dollars in its AI technology over the past two years and would continue to do so, with the main aim of making people’s lives easier and keeping public trust in technology. Under the accord, technology companies have agreed to build AI models under strict rules and testing.
