Eating healthy foods after waking up is important, but the timing of what you eat matters as much as the food itself. After a long overnight fast, the body’s first meal or drink can affect digestion, energy levels, and even food cravings later in the day, nutritionists say.

Indian consultant nutritionist Kiran Kukreja has recommended avoiding certain foods and beverages on an empty stomach.

Citrus fruits

Many people eat oranges or pineapple for breakfast, but these naturally acidic fruits can aggravate acidity and gastric problems when consumed on an empty stomach. While citrus fruits are highly nutritious, the timing of consumption matters, Kukreja said.

Green tea

Green tea is popular for weight loss and as a source of antioxidants, but drinking it on an empty stomach can cause acidity, nausea, or stomach discomfort in some people. The caffeine and tannins in green tea can irritate the stomach lining, Kukreja said.

Tea and coffee

Many people start their day with a cup of tea or coffee, but consuming them on an empty stomach can lead to acidity, bloating, and digestive discomfort, Kukreja said.

Spicy food

Eating spicy food containing green or dried chili on an empty stomach can irritate the stomach lining, causing heartburn, discomfort, and digestive problems.

Fruit juice

Fruit juice contains significantly less fiber than whole fruit. Drinking it on an empty stomach in the morning can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels, Kukreja said.
