Jamaat-e-Islami Amir and opposition leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said no compromise would be made on the country’s borders and sovereignty.

“Forget one inch of land — no one will be allowed to set foot on even a single grain of sand,” he said at an exchange of views at the Netrokona Circuit House on Friday.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said a united stance by all parties in parliament on the border issue would have sent a positive message internationally. “All 348 members of the current parliament represent the people. On matters of national interest, everyone should work together,” he said.

He said the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is carrying out its duties to protect the borders. “If necessary, the people will stand beside them with patriotic resolve. In the past, the united stance of the people in various areas has made it possible to deal with undesirable situations,” he said.

On the issue of government allocations, the Jamaat amir alleged that development grants and funding are being distributed to constituencies held by ruling-party lawmakers, while areas represented by opposition members are being deprived of similar benefits.

He added that those in charge of running the state should fulfill their responsibilities equally to every region and citizen, regardless of political affiliation. “The government must work for the welfare of all people in the country, not for any particular political party or group,” he said.
