US President Donald Trump said he was surprised to see millions of Iranians crying at the funeral of late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“I thought people hated him. But seeing so many people crying, I was amazed,” Trump told Axios in a telephone interview.

Trump also said he could have “eliminated everyone” at the funeral if he had wanted to, but did not. A senior US official told Axios that Trump decided against further strikes after the initial operation.

Trump said one factor in his decision was the ongoing diplomatic process between the US and Iran, with a 60-day negotiation window currently active following last month’s memorandum of understanding.

The funeral was attended by dignitaries from numerous countries, including India’s Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain and junior foreign minister Margarita, China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee vice chairman He Wei, Taliban government foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, and representatives of Hamas and Hezbollah.
