PANCHAGARH — Bangladesh will distribute agriculture cards without considering political affiliation, religion or caste, Junior Water Resources Minister Farhad Hossain Azad said Tuesday.
“Whoever is eligible will get this card,” Azad said. “Four crore [40 million] families across the country will receive family cards in phases.”
Azad spoke as chief guest at an agriculture card distribution event Tuesday afternoon at Bairati High School field in Panchpir Union of Boda upazila in Panchagarh district.
The junior minister said 2,000 farmers in the Panchpir area of Panchagarh received agriculture cards Tuesday under a pilot project being rolled out in other parts of the country. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the program virtually.
“I myself do not know who received these cards,” Azad said. “The agriculture ministry and the upazila administration vetted recipients in three rounds to determine who would receive cards under which category.”
Family cards have already been launched, he said, and another 50 lakh [5 million] family cards will be distributed across Bangladesh in the next two to three months.
“To protect Bangladesh, not just the administration but all conscious people regardless of party, religion or caste must unite and cooperate with the government and administration,” Azad said. “Only then will the country move forward.”
He said the government would not judge anyone on partisan grounds when providing assistance to those affected by disasters. “Those who are genuinely affected and deserving will be given priority,” he said.
The event was presided over by District Commissioner Sukria Parveen. Azad later handed agriculture cards and two fruit-tree saplings each to 15 farmers.
