KUSHTIA — Police in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia have arrested two people in connection with the killing of pir Abdur Rahman, also known as Shamim Jahangir, 57, in Philipnagar union, authorities said. The arrests were made in an overnight operation Sunday, April 27.
Those arrested are Alif Islam, son of Rabiul Islam of the Philipnagar West South area, and Biplob, son of Naharul Mondal from the same area.
Daulatpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arifur Islam confirmed the arrests. He said police carried out the operation in the Philipnagar area late Sunday and arrested two people, Biplob and Alif. A man named Faraz Ali was also brought to the station for questioning, the officer said. After questioning, Faraz Ali was released to his family on a written undertaking.
The officer said the operation was launched after police obtained multiple video clips and other evidence showing the arrested suspects’ involvement in the killing of Shamim Jahangir. The arrested men were sent to Kushtia district jail through the court at about 3 p.m. Monday, he said. Operations continue to arrest the remaining suspects.
Shamim Jahangir was killed April 11 after local Muslims and area residents stormed his shrine in Philipnagar union of Daulatpur upazila over allegations that he had distorted Islam. The attackers vandalized and torched the shrine, looted valuables, and beat the pir and his followers, police said. Shamim Jahangir was taken to the Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex and died there at 4 p.m. the same day. Three of his followers — Mohan Ali, Jamirun Nesa and Zubair — were also wounded in the attack. Shamim Jahangir was the head of the shrine. The next day, April 12, his body was autopsied at Kushtia General Hospital and buried in the Philipnagar West-South cemetery at about 5:30 p.m. under heavy police guard.
Late on Monday, April 13, Fazlur Rahman, a retired schoolteacher and elder brother of Shamim Jahangir, filed a case at Daulatpur Police Station naming four suspects along with 180 to 200 unidentified people. These are the first two arrests in the killing, made 16 days after the incident.
