KUSHTIA — A man known locally as a pir was killed and three people were injured Saturday when a crowd attacked, ransacked and set fire to his shrine in Daulatpur upazila over alleged remarks insulting religion, residents said.
The head of the shrine, Abdur Rahman, also known as Shamim, 65, died of his injuries, police said. Three injured people were taken to a hospital.
The attack took place around midday on April 11 at the concrete structure known as “Shamim Babar Darbar Sharif” at Darogar Mor in Filipnagar union, residents said.
A fire service team brought the blaze under control. Police took control of the scene and tightened security in the area.
Residents said remarks by Rahman had spread on social media. He had insulted religion, they alleged, and the accusations stirred tension in the area. Angry residents then attacked his shrine, ransacking the property and setting it on fire. Shamim and several others were wounded.
Police took the injured to the Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors said Shamim was dead, residents said. He was the son of the late Jaser Master of South Filipnagar village in Filipnagar union.
Tauhidul Hasan Tuhin, family planning officer at the upazila health complex, said four injured people were brought to the hospital. “One of them has died, and the others are being treated,” he said.
Daulatpur police station officer in charge Arifur Rahman said by mobile phone that he was on leave. “I am on leave. But I have learned about the matter,” he said.
Inspector for investigation Sheikh Mohammad Ali Mortuza said officers were at the scene and trying to bring the situation under control. He would provide further details later, he said.
