Bus hits broken-down van in Kushtia, killing two

A van driver and a woman passenger have been killed after a Shyamoli Paribahan bus hit their pakhi van in Mirpur, Kushtia. Another woman was seriously injured.

The accident happened at around 10am on Thursday (October 1) on the Kushtia-Meherpur regional road in front of Amtala Madrasa in Sadarpur union of the upazila, Mirpur police station officer-in-charge Md Shahidul Islam confirmed.

The dead are van driver Kamrul Islam, son of Abdus Sattar of Nawda Azampur village in Mirpur upazila, and Bhanumoti, 55, wife of Hashem Ali of Swastipur village in the Bhadalia area of Kushtia Sadar upazila. The injured woman is Bhanumoti’s daughter, Hasina.

Witnesses said the van was carrying several passengers along the Kushtia-Meherpur road when its axle broke and it collapsed on the road. A Meherpur-bound Shyamoli Paribahan bus then hit it hard from behind, crushing it. Bhanumoti died on the spot, and the driver and her daughter were critically injured.

Members of the Amla police camp and fire service recovered her body and took the injured to Mirpur upazila health complex. As their condition worsened, they were sent to Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital, where Kamrul Islam died shortly after being taken to the ICU, resident medical officer Dr Iqbal Hossain confirmed. Local people said Bhanumoti had been visiting her son-in-law’s home in Nawda Azampur.

“Legal action is under way, and the cause of the accident is being investigated,” said OC Md Shahidul Islam.
