Two police members, including a sub-inspector (SI), have been temporarily suspended over an alleged assault on national team cricketer Naeem Hasan. Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has also formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident.

CMP Commissioner Hasan Md. Showkat Ali gave this information to reporters on Saturday (June 13) afternoon during a visit to Naeem Hasan’s home.

Naeem Hasan’s home is in the Faridarpara area of Chandgaon in Chattogram city. CMP Commissioner Hasan Md. Showkat Ali went there to learn about the assault and express his regret. He later spoke with reporters.

Hasan Md. Showkat Ali said the highest action under the rules would be taken against the accused police members. They had been temporarily suspended in the meantime, and a departmental case was also under way. If anyone else was involved in the incident, action would be taken against them too.

In response to a question, the police commissioner said the police would not bear responsibility for anyone’s individual offense. Whoever was responsible would have to bear it. None of those involved would be spared in the slightest.

Police were accused of pulling Naeem out of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and assaulting and harassing him in the Lalkhan Bazar area of Chattogram city late on Friday night, as he was returning home after a Dhaka Premier League match. He alleged that he was also harassed after being taken to the police station.

Naeem Hasan told reporters he had landed at Chattogram airport on a night flight from Dhaka and set off for home by CNG. As he came off the expressway in the Lalkhan Bazar area, police signaled the CNG to stop. Police then took the vehicle’s documents from the driver. After making him get out of the vehicle, SI Shafiqul Islam of Khulshi police station and a police source named Sohel assaulted Naeem with sticks and pipes, he said. At one point, police took Naeem to the police station in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, where he was also harassed, he said. Naeem was later released from the station after the intervention of BCB officials.

The two police members temporarily suspended over the incident are SI Shafiqul Islam of Khulshi police station and constable Md. Rasel Chowdhury.

Earlier, on Friday night, they were withdrawn from Khulshi police station and attached to the CMP’s Dampara police lines. The CMP commissioner said the police source Sohel had also been detained over the incident.
