Police have arrested a teenager named Arafat Hossain, 15, over the rape of a 5-year-old child in Ulipur, Kurigram.
He was sent to court on Wednesday (June 3). The seriously injured child is currently undergoing treatment at Kurigram Sadar Hospital.
The incident took place earlier, on Tuesday (June 2) afternoon, in the Jonaidanga railway station area of the municipality. At the time, the child was playing with other children near the home.
According to the complaint, the neighboring teenager, Arafat, lured the child to an under-construction building of a closed madrasa nearby. There he threatened and beat the child, covered the child’s mouth and committed rape. As the child was bleeding, the teenager threatened the child not to tell anyone and fled the scene.
The child later returned home and told the family the whole story. In a bloodied condition, the child was quickly admitted to the upazila health complex. Seeing that the condition was critical, the child was transferred to Kurigram Sadar Hospital.
On the evening of the incident (Tuesday), the child’s father filed a case at Ulipur police station, after which police arrested the accused teenager, Arafat. The arrested teenager is the son of Sohel Rana of the area.
Dr. Nur Newaz, the resident medical officer of Kurigram Sadar Hospital, said the child is under treatment and is currently stable.
Kamal Kishore Ghosh, inspector (investigation) of Ulipur police station, said the arrested teenager has been sent to court.
