Locals said several people drank alcohol together at Balarhat bazaar on Sunday night, then returned home and gradually felt severely ill. As the poisoning took hold, two of them became critical during the night. Family members rushed them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where Huzur Ali died while undergoing treatment.
Sattar Mia died at his second wife’s home in the Koyarmari cluster village; his body was later kept at his sister’s home in the Enayetpur Satventi area. Md Saju Mia, another of the men, died under treatment around midday on Monday.
Local union council member Md Maidul Islam confirmed the incident, saying the men had died mainly from excessive drinking. He said the families had initially tried to keep the matter secret so the bodies would not have to undergo an autopsy.
On receiving the news, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Parvez and the officer-in-charge of Mithapukur police station visited the scene.
Mithapukur police station Officer-in-Charge Ershad Hossain said the matter is being looked into and a police investigation is under way.
