Police in Ulipur, Kurigram, have arrested Yunus Ali, 42, a leader of the now-banned Awami League, in connection with a sabotage case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Sayed Ibne Siddique, officer-in-charge of Ulipur police station, confirmed the arrest Tuesday, August 25.
Yunus, who was arrested, is the son of Nur Islam of Sadullah village and is known as an active member of the banned Awami League in Tabakpur union.
According to police, Yunus was arrested during an operation in the Sadullah area of Tabakpur union on Monday afternoon.
According to the case, an act of sabotage occurred on the night of November 12 last year on the road toward Moglabasa, east of the Arjundara Bridge in Durgapur union. Petrol was poured on the small Gorai drain bridge and a tire was set on fire. The case alleges the act was carried out to create panic on the road and cause sabotage ahead of a lockdown called for November 13.
When police reached the scene after being alerted, Yunus and other banned Awami League leaders and activists present fled quickly. A case was later filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with the incident. Yunus, who had been evading arrest, has now been apprehended in that case.
Sayed Ibne Siddique, officer-in-charge of Ulipur police station, said that after completing legal formalities, Yunus was produced before the court, which ordered him sent to jail.
