A young Burundian man, Pentra Bushima Amin, who completed memorization of the entire Quran within just five months of embracing Islam, is representing Burundi at the 46th King Abdul Aziz International Competition for Quran Memorization, Recitation, and Interpretation, held in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

The competition, running from August 6 to August 19 (6 Rabi al-Awwal), features 334 competitors, both men and women, from 133 countries across its Quran memorization, recitation, and interpretation categories. Organizers say it is the largest field of participants in the competition’s history.

Pentra, from the East African nation of Burundi, first began learning about Islam at just 14 years old, at a Muslim friend’s invitation. Islam’s values, ethics, and way of life drew him in deeply, and he eventually converted. Inspired by his decision, four more members of his family, including his parents and a sister, also embraced Islam.

Pentra began his journey to memorize the Quran immediately after converting. Through relentless dedication, hard work, and perseverance, he completed memorizing the entire Quran in just five months. He later refined and reinforced his memorization and recitation through regular repetition and practice.

Pentra went on to place first among roughly 500 competitors at a national Quran competition in Burundi. That achievement earned him the opportunity to represent Burundi at the 46th King Abdul Aziz International Competition for Quran Memorization, Recitation, and Interpretation in the holy city of Mecca.

This year’s competition features 334 competitors, both men and women, from 133 countries. Pentra expressed excitement at the opportunity to take part in the competition, held at the Grand Mosque (Masjidul Haram).

He said that being able to stand on the same stage as huffaz, or Quran memorizers, from around the world, just one year after embracing Islam, is the greatest achievement of his life. He praised the Saudi leadership’s patronage of the Quran and those who serve it, and expressed gratitude for the organization of such an international competition.

According to information published by the International Quran News Agency (IQNA) and the Saudi Press Agency, Pentra Bushima Amin’s inspiring story has drawn praise worldwide. His achievement, completing memorization of the Quran within a short time of converting and going on to represent his country on the international stage, is being seen as a remarkable example of devotion, perseverance, and love for the Quran.
