Imam dies while prostrating in Fajr prayer in Patuakhali

Hafez Muhammad Ataullah, imam of a mosque in Patuakhali, collapsed and died while prostrating during the second rakat of the Sunnah Fajr prayer. The incident occurred at dawn Monday, August 17, at Sreerampur Bazar Mosque in Moukaran union, Sadar upazila.

Ataullah had prepared for the Fajr prayer at dawn as he did every day. After going into prostration during the second rakat of the Sunnah prayer, he did not rise again. Worshippers realized something was wrong, went to him, and found him dead.

Hafez Muhammad Ataullah was a resident of the area near Talukdar Bazar, Ward 5, Sreerampur union, Dumki upazila. His father is Maulana Abdus Salam. The only child of his father, Ataullah studied at Jamia Ashrafia Madrasa in Patuakhali. He was the father of two children.

Local residents said Ataullah had served as imam of Sreerampur Bazar Mosque in Moukaran union for about a year and a half. Alongside his religious duties, he maintained good relations with local residents and was popular among worshippers for his gentle nature and pleasant manner.

A neighbor said Ataullah was a calm and kind man who spoke warmly with everyone and was never seen behaving badly toward anyone. He prayed regularly and observed religious discipline.

Ataullah’s cousin, Mohibullah, said he was his family’s only child and leaves behind two young children. Relatives are deeply grieved by his sudden death.

Family sources said Ataullah’s first funeral prayer will be held in front of Sreerampur Bazar Mosque after Monday’s Zuhr prayer, with a second funeral prayer to follow at his home after the Asr prayer.
