ISLAMABAD — A U.S. delegation arrived in Pakistan’s capital on Sunday ahead of the highly anticipated second round of peace talks between Iran and the United States, sources familiar with the matter said.

The dialogue between representatives of the two long-standing adversaries is expected to take place next week, though no formal schedule has been announced by Pakistan, Iran or the U.S. administration.

Security across the federal capital has been tightened to an unprecedented degree to receive the high-level foreign delegations. Islamabad police said in a statement that all vehicle movement in the city’s Red Zone and extended Red Zone would remain fully suspended until further notice.

Citizens have been advised to use alternative routes. The district administrations of Islamabad and Rawalpindi have also suspended all public transport and goods-carrying vehicles in the two cities. The district administrators issued the order without citing a specific reason and called on the public to cooperate with security forces.

The entire city has been placed on high alert under the directives of Rawalpindi police city officer Syed Khalid Mahmood Hamdani. More than 10,000 police personnel have been deployed and more than 600 special pickets have been set up at entry and exit points to ensure the security of foreign delegations. Elite commandos and snipers have taken position at sensitive locations, and quick-response units, including the Dolphin Force, are conducting round-the-clock patrols. CCTV cameras and modern technology from the Safe City project are being used to monitor sensitive installations and residential areas.
