Speculation over Real Madrid’s next coach has run for some time. Now club president Florentino Perez has given a clear answer: if he is re-elected in the upcoming vote, Jose Mourinho will be appointed Real Madrid’s new head coach. According to beIN Sports, Perez made the announcement in a video released as part of his campaign.
The announcement opens the way for Mourinho’s much-discussed return to the Santiago Bernabeu. After his spell at Benfica, the Portuguese coach is set to begin a second chapter at Real Madrid.
In the video — captioned with the slogan “On the way to making more history” — posted on Perez’s official account, Mourinho appears in a Real Madrid jersey. Asked a short question, he replies simply: “Yes.”
Mourinho’s first spell at Real Madrid ran from 2010 to 2013. In that time the club won one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey and one Spanish Super Cup, and set a historic record of 100 league points under him.
But Mourinho did not win the UEFA Champions League in his first spell, so claiming Europe’s most prestigious club trophy would be one of his main goals if he takes charge again.
A possible second chapter would bring another big challenge: ending Real Madrid’s two-season trophy drought and returning the team to winning ways.
