NATO chief has no idea about Iran’s nuclear work: Russia

Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s representative to international organisations in Vienna, has criticised NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s comments on Iran’s nuclear programme, saying he has no idea about it.

Responding to Rutte’s recent remarks in a post on X on Thursday (October 1), Ulyanov said: “This man claims to be NATO’s top executive, yet his remarks make clear he has no idea about Iran’s nuclear programme. The lack of professionalism, or its low level, in the West is a real disaster.”

On Wednesday, referring to the military operation known as “Epic Fury”, Rutte said about 5,000 aircraft had taken off from military bases in Europe since February 28 this year to support the war against Iran. Highlighting the role of European military infrastructure in the US operation, he said it would have been very difficult, even practically impossible, without Europe serving as a hub for US power projection and the movement of military equipment.

Rutte also claimed that only the United States has the capability to destroy Iran’s nuclear capacity, describing Iran’s nuclear programme as a potential and imminent threat not only to Israel and West Asia but also to Europe.

It is not the first such statement from the NATO chief. In July and August this year he acknowledged Europe’s support for the US military operation against Iran in various statements and interviews, even detailing how countries such as Italy had provided logistics and military support for the US war.
