The 86-year-old top leader was killed on Feb. 28 this year in a joint U.S.-Israeli air strike. His funeral was postponed at the time because of the war, but the process will now be carried out in stages in July.
According to reports in Iran’s state media, the schedule for the funeral and burial is as follows:
July 4 and 5: A farewell ceremony will be held in the capital, Tehran.
July 6: The main funeral prayers and the funeral will take place in Tehran.
July 7: Another funeral prayer will be held in the holy city of Qom.
July 9: After another funeral prayer at the shrine of Imam Reza in the northeastern holy city of Mashhad, he will be laid to rest.
In line with the late leader’s last wish, he is being buried at the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad. Tehran’s deputy mayor, Mohammad Amin Tavakkoli-Zadeh, said the funeral ceremony in the capital, Tehran, could last at least 24 hours and that authorities believe 15 million to 20 million people may take part.
After Ali Khamenei’s death, his son Mojtaba Khamenei took over as Iran’s new supreme leader at the start of March.
