PANCHAGARH — Two Bangladeshi students detained by India’s Border Security Force in Panchagarh’s Sadar upazila were returned after about eight hours through a flag meeting, officials said.
Lt. Col. Abdullah Mohammad Kayes, commander of the 18 BGB Battalion in Panchagarh, confirmed the incident. He said quick action and contact with the BSF led to a flag meeting that secured the students’ return.
Members of the BSF’s 132 Battalion, Maricha camp, detained the two around 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Mistripara Patshiri border area of Garinabari union in Sadar upazila. They were handed over to the BGB after a flag meeting in the afternoon.
The returned students were identified as Indra, 14, son of Shibu Chandra Roy, and Uday, 14, son of Samaru Chandra Roy, both from Atwari upazila in Panchagarh. They are sixth- and ninth-grade students at Rasheya High School.
Local sources said the two had come to visit their sister’s home the previous day and went to take photos near sub-pillar No. 9 of main pillar 417 on the border in the morning. They were detained by the BSF after inadvertently crossing into Indian territory.
Garinabari Union Parishad Chairman Monwar Hossain Dipu said the BGB’s quick response and effective communication had made it possible to bring the students home within a short time.
