About 2 crore (20 million) depositors have been left in trouble because a third of the banking sector’s money was looted under the banned Awami League government, Bangladesh Bank governor Md Mostakur Rahman has said.

He made the remarks on Thursday (6 August) at a discussion on Bangla QR organised by Dutch-Bangla Bank at the University of Dhaka.

The governor said the Awami League government had crippled the country’s economy, and that a third of the banking sector’s money had been taken away. He described what is now called bad loans as, in reality, “theft.”

He said about 2 crore depositors had been left suffering because of the sector’s situation, making it hard to run the banking sector smoothly. The sector’s total bad-loan rate is currently 36 percent — a major warning sign for the sector, he said.

Saying an 18-month special plan had been taken to cut bad loans, the governor said borrowers would be given an exit through bullet payment in the first six months, and that action would be taken over the following year through a distressed-asset management law and the money-loan court. The two laws could be passed in the next parliament session, he said.

The Bangladesh Bank governor also said there was a plan to launch a new package of 60,000 crore taka (600 billion) from next September to boost credit flow to the private sector.

He also said an initiative would be taken to create 5,000 new entrepreneurs in every upazila of the country, with support for July uprising fighters.
