More than 2.15 million Palestinians have been displaced in the Gaza Strip and are living in extremely dire conditions. Of them, more than 867,000 have taken shelter in makeshift tents. These tents, however, are no longer fit for habitation. Al Jazeera reported the news online, citing Gaza’s government media office.
With winter approaching, the office warned Monday of an impending humanitarian catastrophe, noting that more than 500,000 children are among those living in tents.
Cranes, weatherproof tents, insulation materials, and other essential shelter supplies must be allowed into the besieged territory immediately, it said, calling on the international community to press Israeli authorities on the matter.
Meanwhile, Gaza is facing an acute shortage of food, water, and medical care because of the ongoing Israeli military operation. Aid organizations have repeatedly warned about the situation.
According to earlier figures from the media office, Israeli forces have destroyed 90 percent of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure since the offensive that began on October 8, 2023. The United Nations estimates reconstruction will cost roughly $70 billion.
