The Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written to India’s Home Minister Amit Shah demanding answers over allegations that pellet guns were fired at protesting students at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. He also posted the letter on his X account on Sunday morning.
It is alleged that pellet guns were fired at students during the march towards parliament held on 20 July in protest at the paper leak. Several protesters were injured.
Rahul claims that the medical records of one injured protester also record pellet-gun wounds. Delhi Police, however, have claimed they did not fire pellet guns.
In his letter to Amit Shah on Saturday, Rahul wrote: “I am seeking answers for the barbaric assault carried out on the students’ peaceful programme on 20 July.”
Rahul said: “They took to the streets demanding a transparent education system. Instead of listening to their demands, the police force struck them.”
In his claim, hundreds of students were injured. Rahul also alleged that women protesters were beaten.
Rahul put two questions to the home minister. First: as union home minister, did he give permission to fire pellet guns at students? If he did not give permission, who did? Second: were those who were baton-charging students in plain clothes police officers or volunteers? Who deployed them?
Last Friday Rahul appeared before the media with a young man injured by pellets. Showing the wounds on his body, he said: “The government is denying that shots were fired. But here is the proof.”
