The secondary and higher education division of the education ministry has issued standing-release orders against seven teachers involved in the examination committee over the holding of the HSC examination amid mismanagement in waterlogged conditions at Cumilla Government Women’s College. Students of the college have held a human chain in protest at the decision.

In line with a previously announced programme, students formed a human chain on the college campus at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. They demanded the cancellation of the transfer orders for the seven teachers. At the human chain they chanted “Why were seven teachers transferred together — we want an answer” and “We want justice.”

At one point, the transferred associate professor of the English department, Mohammad Mohsin, tried to take the banner from the students to stop them protesting. He has been transferred to Barguna Government College. He then broke down in tears in front of the students.

Addressing the students, Mohammad Mohsin said: “Do not cost me my job. I beg your forgiveness. Do not do us any harm.”

Students Tanha and Shanta, who took part in the human chain, said the programme had been organised entirely on their own initiative and that no teacher had encouraged them to protest. “We will not let any harm come to our teachers. All the sirs are government employees and can be transferred. But there is no justification for transferring seven teachers together over the issue of rainwater,” they said.

The college’s new principal, Mosammat Amena Begum, told Samakal that some students came to the campus with banners and placards demanding the cancellation of the seven teachers’ transfers. They protested peacefully. Teachers spoke to them. Since the matter is a government decision, it was explained to them. The students then ended the programme and left.

The seven teachers involved in the examination committee were placed on standing release after nationwide criticism over the holding of the HSC examination amid severe mismanagement in waterlogged conditions at Cumilla Government Women’s College. Their new postings have been set in various districts including Cox’s Bazar, Noakhali, Sylhet and Barguna.

The information was given last Thursday in a letter signed by the deputy secretary of the government college-2 branch of the education ministry’s secondary and higher education division, Md A Kuddus. The letter said the seven teachers must be released from their current posts by 29 July; otherwise they will be treated as released with immediate effect from the afternoon of that day.

The transferred teachers include the vice-principal of Cumilla Government Women’s College, A K M Zahirul Alam (Chiora Government College, Cumilla); the professor of the mathematics department, Md Abdul Malek (Cox’s Bazar Government College); the associate professor of the botany department, Kanak Barua (Hatiya Dwip Government College, Noakhali); the associate professor of the Islamic history and culture department, Dr Muhammad Ullah Majumder (Lakshmipur Government College); the assistant professor of the political science department, Nur Mohammad Nur Ullah (Nabinagar Government College, Brahmanbaria); the lecturer in the accounting department, Md Al-Amin (Beanibazar Government College, Sylhet); and the associate professor of the English department, Mohammad Mohsin (Barguna Government College).
