Mohammad Sakib, 22, has died and four other young men are in hospital after drinking “Jhakkas”, a drink made by mixing alcohol with various drugs, at a fish barbecue party in Sadar upazila of Noakhali.
Sudharam Model police station inspector (investigation) Idrisur Rahman confirmed the death on Sunday (4 October). The party took place in East Lakshminarayanpur village in Ward 6 of Kadir Hanif union, where Sakib lived.
According to local people, several young men held the party on Friday night (2 October) at the house of a local resident, Milon, near the canal east of the women’s college, to welcome a friend back from abroad. They made and drank the mixture, then went home after dinner.
At around 5am on Saturday, Sakib and four others fell ill. Sakib and Md Tipu, 25, got worse and were taken to a private hospital in Noakhali at around 11am, where Sakib was declared dead. Saiful Islam Pakhi, 22, has been sent to Dhaka for better treatment, and Tipu, Monir Hossain Shanto, 23, and Mohammad Rasel, 23, have been admitted to Noakhali’s 250-bed General Hospital.
The hospital’s resident medical officer, Dr Rajib Ahmed Chowdhury, said three people were being treated there after falling ill from toxic alcohol.
