Police in Damurhuda, Chuadanga, have arrested Sultan Ahmed, 50, a local leader of the Awami League, whose activities are banned. He was arrested from Muktarpur village in the upazila early on Wednesday. Police said he is the son of the late Didar Hossain of Muktarpur and had been serving as president of the ward 8 Awami League.
Police sources said a team from Damurhuda police station raided Muktarpur village early on Wednesday on a tip-off and arrested Sultan Ahmed in his own area. Police said there are cases against him on various charges, including political violence.
The officer-in-charge of Damurhuda police station said Sultan Ahmed would be produced in court through the proper legal process after initial questioning.
Police drives will continue in order to keep law and order normal, he said.
