Farmers across Rangpur district’s eight upazilas are delighted with a high yield of early-variety aman paddy this season, and farmers in various parts of the district are busy cutting the ripe crop. According to the district agriculture office, aman has been grown on 166,960 hectares in Rangpur this year. Early aman has so far been harvested on a total of 435 hectares: 205 hectares in Rangpur Sadar upazila, 225 hectares in Kaunia upazila, 2 hectares in Mithapukur upazila and 3 hectares in the metropolitan area.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, aman paddy has been grown on 621,550 hectares this year across the five districts of the Rangpur region: Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Gaibandha and Nilphamari. The production target is 2,001,391 tonnes of rice. Early aman varieties have been grown on 33,000 hectares.
Abu Bakar Saiful Islam, additional director of the Department of Agricultural Extension’s Rangpur region, told BSS: “Harvesting of early aman planted on higher land has already begun. The early aman harvest runs until about mid-October, and the harvest of the main-season aman will start in early November. With floods having less impact this year, early aman production has been as good as hoped.”
He said that after cutting early aman, farmers grow a range of winter crops, including maize, early potatoes and vegetables.
Mahmuda Khatun, additional deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Rangpur, told BSS that aman had been grown on 166,960 hectares in Rangpur district this year, of which early aman had been harvested on 435 hectares. The yield of early aman has been 3.15 tonnes per hectare.
She said farmers in the district would plant rabi crops right after cutting early aman. Farmers hope to earn good prices from the paddy and the rabi crops together. The yield has been similar to last year’s.
