In Brahmanpara upazila of Cumilla, a younger brother has died half an hour after the death of his elder brother. The two were very close in life and worked together too, and the bond held in death: they were buried in adjoining graves after a joint funeral prayer.

The funeral prayer for the two brothers was held after the Zuhr prayer on Wednesday at the Eidgah ground of Hurarpar village, and they were then buried side by side.

The elder brother, Abdul Jalil Mia, 75, died at about 9pm on Tuesday. About half an hour later the younger brother, Joynal Abedin Junu, 70, died at his home. They were sons of the late Askar Ali of Hurarpar village in Chandla union.

Family and local sources said Abdul Jalil had long suffered from various complications of old age and had been admitted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, where he died at about 9pm on Tuesday. When news of his death reached home, Joynal Abedin fell ill, and about half an hour later he too died at his home.

The deaths cast a pall of grief over the area, and relatives and local people gathered at the house to see them for the last time.

Their nephew, Jasim Uddin, said: “My two uncles were deeply attached to each other all their lives. Early in life they worked together at Adamjee Jute Mills. After the mill closed they came back home together again. Even in death they could not be parted.”

Abdul Jalil Mia leaves his wife, five sons and two daughters. Joynal Abedin Junu leaves his wife, four sons and two daughters.

Shahabuddin Murad, acting chairman of Chandla union parishad, said: “The two brothers had an extraordinary relationship in life. Their passing on the same day, half an hour apart, is truly rare and heartbreaking. The whole area is in mourning.”
