Two children, aged 10 and 9, have drowned in a pond in Brahmanpara upazila of Cumilla. The incident happened at around 11am on Saturday (3 October) at Ichhamati Bari in Gopalnagar Uttarpara, Dulalpur union.
The 10-year-old, from Ramnagar village in the upazila, was staying at his aunt’s house in Gopalnagar Uttarpara and studied in class four at a local school. The 9-year-old, from Ichhamati Bari itself, was a pre-primary pupil at a local school.
According to local people and relatives, the two boys went with several other children to bathe in a pond next to the house. At one point the two sank below the surface. The other children began shouting, and neighbours and relatives rushed in and pulled them out of the water.
They were taken to Brahmanpara upazila health complex, where the doctor on duty declared them dead. The doctor, Redwan Ahmed Himel, said initial examination suggested both had died before reaching hospital, and ECGs were done to confirm the deaths.
