The university administration has formed a five-member inquiry committee to establish the real cause of the clashes and attack at the University of Rajshahi and to recommend the necessary action against those responsible. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 10 working days.
The committee was formed under a decision of the university administration after the incident on Monday, 27 July, with Professor Md Rezaul Karim-2 of the biochemistry and molecular biology department as convener. The administrator of the university’s public relations office, Professor Dr S M Kamruzzaman, confirmed the matter.
The other members of the committee are Professor Md Golam Sadik of the pharmacy department, Professor Md Asadul Haque of the materials science and engineering department, Professor Ariful Islam of the philosophy department and Professor A Naim Faruqi of the applied chemistry and chemical engineering department.
The pro-vice-chancellor (education), Professor Dr Mamunur Rashid, said: “After yesterday’s incident the university administration has formed a five-member inquiry committee to find out whether there has been any damage to the library and other buildings, and to establish the real cause of the incident.”
He said the inquiry committee will visit three places in particular with the cooperation of the police administration: the university’s central library; the RAKSU building, where an attack is alleged to have taken place; and the proctor’s office, where the incident is alleged to have begun.
The pro-vice-chancellor said: “The main aim of the inquiry committee is to find the real cause and origin of the incident, and to verify whether any damage has been done to the university’s buildings.”
He said members of the committee held a preliminary meeting on Tuesday morning. They have not yet reviewed any video footage or photographs. The inquiry will be conducted subsequently by visiting the scene and collecting the relevant evidence.
