Police have arrested Hamidur Rahman Tayef Sarkar, a presidential aspirant of the upazila unit of the banned Chhatra League, in Nabinagar, Brahmanbaria.
He was arrested at around 10 p.m. on Monday (June 22) from the Pouro Mayor Market area near the Konikara bridge in the upazila. After the arrest, an allegation arose that Chhatra Dal had lobbied or made recommendations for his release.
The arrested man, Tayef, is the son of Qatar expatriate Tofayel Sarkar of the Collegepara area in ward 4 of Nabinagar municipality.
According to local sources, Tayef had been a presidential aspirant of the upazila Chhatra League. He recently came into local discussion after a video went viral on social media showing posters and banners of the banned Awami League being put up in various places.
A witness who did not wish to be named claimed that, after the arrest, a section of the upazila Chhatra Dal had lobbied to free Tayef from police custody. No comment on the matter was obtained from Chhatra Dal, however.
Confirming the arrest, the officer-in-charge of Nabinagar police station, Morshedul Alam, said the case was in process and that Tayef would be sent to court after the legal formalities. He could not immediately give any specific information on which case Tayef had been arrested under.
