DUMKI, Patuakhali — A college student jumped from the Payra Bridge into the river in Patuakhali’s Dumki upazila on Sunday evening after a quarrel with her boyfriend, but was rescued alive by local fishermen and army personnel, witnesses said.
The incident occurred at the Payra Bridge, also known as the Lebukhali Bridge, on Sunday evening, Jan. 11.
The woman, identified as Tanjila, is a second-year BBA honors student at Brojo Mohon (BM) Government College in Barishal. Her home is in the Panpatti area of Patuakhali’s Galachipa upazila.
According to family sources, Tanjila had been in a long-term relationship with Sajib, a resident of the same area who is currently serving as a soldier at the Rangpur cantonment. On the day of the incident, the two had a heated argument and disagreement during a mobile phone conversation in the afternoon. Out of anger and frustration, Tanjila jumped from the Payra Bridge into the river.
Witnesses said local residents began shouting when they saw what happened, and soldiers at the Lebukhali cantonment took immediate notice. A rescue operation was carried out with the help of fishermen’s boats, and Tanjila was pulled from the river alive and taken to Lebukhali Islamia Hospital.
The duty doctor at the hospital said she had suffered some injuries from falling into the river from a great height, but her condition was no longer critical.
Dumki police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Selim Uddin said police were sent to the hospital immediately after receiving word and that the student’s family had been informed. No written complaint had been filed, he said. “If a complaint is received, necessary legal action will be taken following an investigation,” Uddin said. The student is being treated at the hospital, he added.
