SYLHET — A former union parishad member was killed while trying to stop a clash between two groups in Sylhet’s Osmaninagar upazila, police said.

Atik Mia, 42, died at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital late Wednesday after being critically wounded in the clash, police said. He was a former member of Ward 9 in Burungga union, the son of Mahmad Ali of West Sirajnagar village. Osmaninagar police detained 12 people on suspicion of involvement and sent them to jail through the court.

Police and residents said Aklis Mia and Abdul Wahab Pasu, both of West Sirajnagar village in Burungga union, had been embroiled in a long-running land dispute, with frequent clashes between the two sides. The two sides clashed Wednesday afternoon, prompting police to come to the scene to restore order. After police left, local elders convened a meeting to mediate the dispute.

On the way back from the mediation meeting that night, Atik was attacked by Abdul Wahab’s group, police said. He was struck repeatedly on the head and chest with sharp weapons. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and died there overnight.

Atik’s father, Mahmad Ali, said: “When we tried to mediate the two sides’ problems, Abdul Wahab, known as Pasu, his son, Attar Ali, Manju Mia, Mizan Mia and Mukidganra attacked him with sharp weapons and killed him. I want exemplary punishment for my son’s killers.”

Osmaninagar police station inspector Mohammad Morshedul Hasan Bhuiyan confirmed the incident and said police conducted raids, detained 12 people and sent them to court.
