SONARGAON — A video of BNP leaders and activists in Sonargaon discussing the purchase and stockpiling of illegal weapons ahead of the national election has gone viral on social media. Bazlur Rahman, a former vice-president of the upazila BNP, appears in the video.
The video spread late Wednesday, Jan. 21, causing a stir across the district.
In the video, Rahman is seen eating at a local restaurant in Sonargaon with supporters. One of those with him is heard saying that large quantities of illegal weapons are being stockpiled in the Sonargaon area ahead of the election. Another person sitting next to Rahman is heard whispering in his ear that they need two more weapons for the election. The conversation also clearly refers to the stockpiling of illegal weapons.
Local sources said Rahman is campaigning for independent candidate Muhammad Giasuddin in the Narayanganj-3 and Narayanganj-4 constituencies in the coming national election. All those in the conversation are working for that candidate.
Rahman’s mobile phone was switched off when reached for comment several times.
Azharul Islam Mannan, president of the Sonargaon upazila BNP, and Professor Mamun Mahmud, convener of the Narayanganj district BNP, did not answer repeated phone calls seeking comment.
Sonargaon police station Officer-in-Charge Muhibullah said: “We are aware of the video discussing weapons. We are working on it. All units of the law enforcement agencies are already working on it.”
Lt. Col. H.M. Sajjad Hossain, commanding officer of RAB-11, said: “We are aware of the video. Work is ongoing on this matter.”
Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mizanur Rahman Munshi said: “I am not aware of the video. I am looking into it.”
