RAJBARI — A worker at the Karim Filling Station in Goalanda Mor, Rajbari sadar upazila, was run over and killed early Friday after asking for payment for fuel, according to allegations. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16.
The dead worker, Ripon Saha, 30, was the son of Pabitra Saha of Sahapara in Khankhanapur Union, Rajbari sadar upazila. Police on Friday afternoon arrested the vehicle’s owner, Abul Hashem, also known as Sujon, 55, from his home in Bara Murarbar village in the sadar upazila and seized the vehicle. Police also detained the driver, Kamal Hossain, 43, from Banibah Nijpara village in the sadar upazila.
Abul Hashem is a resident of Bara Murarbar village in the sadar upazila. He is a former treasurer of the Rajbari district BNP and a former president of the district Jubo Dal. He is a first-class contractor by profession.
CCTV footage from the station showed a black Land Cruiser jeep (Dhaka Metro Gha 13-3476) entering the pump for fuel around 4:30 a.m. Worker Ripon Saha and vehicle owner Abul Hashem stood beside the vehicle. After staying for some time, Abul Hashem got into the vehicle. As the vehicle pulled away, Ripon also ran after it. He was run over as the vehicle left.
Md. Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rajbari’s Ahladipur Highway Police Station, said the black vehicle was leaving the Karim Filling Station at Goalanda Mor in the early hours without paying for the fuel. Ripon ran after it for the money up to the Dhaka-Khulna highway. Another worker at the pump, Zakir Hossain, also ran after them. He reached the Dhaka-Khulna highway and saw Ripon’s body, with his head and face crushed, lying on the highway. The body was recovered and sent to the morgue at Rajbari Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
