TANGAIL — A family in the Nothurchar area of Mirzapur Union in Tangail’s Gopalpur upazila was attacked and their home vandalized over a long-running land dispute, the alleged victim said. The incident occurred Sunday evening.

The alleged victim, Md. Abdur Razzak, said his family had a long-running land dispute with the family of neighbor Nazim Uddin. He said Nazim Uddin, son of the late Abhishek of a neighboring house, and his followers attacked their home on Sunday evening. During the attack, the home was vandalized and various belongings inside were looted, he alleged.

Razzak said at least five people, including women and children, were beaten when they tried to resist the attack. One of the injured was admitted to Tangail Medical College Hospital in serious condition.

Razzak filed a written complaint at Gopalpur police station naming nine people. The accused are Nazim Uddin, son of the late Abhishek; Abdul Hamid, son of the late Azali Sheikh; Hamid’s son Md. Hafizul Islam; Md. Kabir Hossain; Harun; Nazim’s son Kamrul Hossain; Hafizul’s son Shahin; and Harun’s son Parvez.

Witnesses said Razzak’s family had a long-running land dispute with Nazim’s family. Nazim Uddin’s followers attacked Razzak’s home Sunday evening over the dispute, beat the residents, vandalized the home and quickly fled the scene.

Members of the accused families denied the allegations, claiming that Razzak’s family vandalized their own home to stage a scene and that they were the ones who actually attacked them.

The officer-in-charge (OC) of Gopalpur police station said: “We have received the written complaint. The matter will be investigated and necessary legal action will be taken.”
