SHARIATPUR — A case has been filed in connection with the attempted murder of trader Khokon Chandra Das, who was hacked and set on fire after petrol was poured on his body in Damudya, Shariatpur. His father, Paresh Chandra Das, filed the case Thursday night naming three people as accused. Police have not yet arrested any of them.
The victim, Khokon Chandra Das, identified two of the attackers by name. A third name emerged from the police investigation. All three were named as accused in the case. They are Sohag Khan, 27, Rabbi Mollah, 21, and Palash Sardar, 25, all from the Koneshwar area of Damudya. They have been in hiding since the incident. Police raided two of their homes and detained their fathers, taking them to the police station before later releasing them.
Attackers first hacked Khokon as he was returning, then poured petrol on his body and set him on fire, according to the case statement. Local residents rescued him and took him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital at night. After initial treatment there, he was moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he is being treated in critical condition in the burn unit’s intensive care unit.
Khokon identified the attackers as Sohag Khan, son of Babul Khan, and Rabbi Mollah, son of Samsuddin Mollah, both from Koneshwar. After the incident, when traders at Keurbhanga market and residents of Tilai village demanded the arrest of the two suspects, police raided their homes. Failing to find the accused, police took their fathers to the police station. A preliminary investigation also identified another participant in the attack, Palash Sardar. Khokon’s father, Paresh Chandra Das, filed the case late Thursday night, naming the three as accused. After the case was filed, Sohag’s and Rabbi’s fathers were released from the police station.
Paresh Chandra Das said attackers robbed his son of 600,000 taka before hacking him with the intent to kill, then setting his body on fire. “By God’s grace, he survived. I do not know how many days it will take for him to recover and return home. I have filed a case at the police station,” he said. “We want the police to quickly arrest the offenders and bring them to justice.”
