NARSINGDI — A retired schoolteacher in Narsingdi’s Shibpur upazila has been hacked and had the tendons in both his legs cut in an attack stemming from a land dispute, his family said. Angry local residents responded by vandalizing and setting fire to the home of his rival, Swapan Mogul.

The attack on Abu Saeed Mogul took place Friday night, Feb. 20, at Mogul Bari in Mollakanda village in Putia union of the upazila.

Abu Saeed is the son of Jamal Uddin Mogul of Mollakanda village. He is a former teacher at Shashpur Kazi Mafiz Uddin High School. He is now in critical condition in an intensive care unit at a hospital in Dhaka.

Rokeya Lipi, Abu Saeed’s daughter, said the family had been in a land dispute with their neighbor Swapan Mogul. “On Thursday morning I went to the disputed land, and Swapan Mogul came and blocked me and began beating me,” she said. “At my screams my father rushed to the spot. Then Swapan Mogul and his brother Kiran Mogul hacked at him with machetes and cut the tendons in both his legs.” With the help of local residents, the family took him first to Shibpur Health Complex and then to the Pongu Hospital in Dhaka for better treatment, she said.
