RANGPUR — Five activists of the National Citizen Party’s youth wing, Jatiya Jubo Shakti, were injured Wednesday evening when student wing leaders allegedly attacked them at the party’s divisional iftar gathering, youth wing leaders said. Three of the injured were being treated at a private hospital, and two others received initial treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
The clash took place at Shaheed Abu Sayed Stadium in Rangpur on the evening of Wednesday, March 11.
NCP convener and lawmaker Nahid Islam, member secretary and lawmaker Akhter Hossain, northern regional chief organizer Sarjis Alam, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, Rangpur divisional organizing secretary and lawmaker Atik Mujahid and Jatiya Jubo Shakti central president Tariqul Islam, along with other central and local NCP leaders, attended the gathering.
According to several NCP, youth wing and student wing leaders in Rangpur, members of the Rangpur metropolitan student wing, Chhatra Shakti, were in charge of the welcome at the stadium entrance.
Alamgir Nayan, senior joint member secretary of the NCP’s Rangpur metropolitan committee, alleged that five youth wing workers from Kaunia-Pirgachha had arrived without invitation cards. When student wing leaders refused to let them enter the stadium, Nayan went to escort them in and the student wing leaders began shouting, he said.
Asked about the allegation, Farhan Tanvir Fahim, joint member secretary of the Chhatra Shakti metropolitan committee, said the group had a political program. “A meeting is being held in our house about this. There is nothing to make a statement about. Nothing much happened there. Both sides clashed,” he said.
Atik Mujahid, NCP Rangpur divisional organizing secretary, said party leaders had met about the incident. “Organizational action will be taken against those who did wrong,” he said.
